High end digital cameras keep getting larger sensors. Can these high end point & shoot cameras produce entry level dslr images? For example, can the Canon SX1IS match the Pentax K-X? I am only comparing the image quality, not zoom, video, ad audio features.
Actually high end P&S cameras sensors are NOT getting bigger, they are only being jammed full of more pixels
The Canon SX1 IS still only has a tiny 1/2.3 " (6.16 x 4.62 mm) sensor, but with 10 mp populating it.
The Pentax K-X on the other hand has a sensor that is over 15 times the size of the SX1 IS or 23.6 x 15.8 mm. A better way to show this is by listing the pixel density of both
SX1 IS = 35 MP/cm²
K-x = 3.3 MP/cm²
You can see, not only are there fewer pixels per cm², but for that reason, they are much larger pixels which can collect more light upon exposure and thus produce less "noise" across the board.
This should clear up your misunderstanding about pixel counts

My husband is going to Iraq this year. I want to get him a camera and a laptop as a gift to use over there. What are some good comps and cameras that will survive over there. For a camera he’ll need someone small that can just go in his pocket or in a case on his belt. For a computer, needs something he can game on and something that has a webcam built in, good graphics all the goods really. Any advice helps.
lenovo thinkpads are a good laptop. get the latest one. i think it is like t600. for a good camera im sorry i cant help u. tell ur husband that he is doing a great deed for this country and he has my support.

hi
looking for the best HD video camera on the market.
trying to make some awesome videos for the web and i’d love to know what is the best HD camera on for the money. see lots of HD 1280X780p video cameras on ebay but what are key crucial features i should be looking for? please help. i’m wanting to get some very professional videos on the web.
What is your budget?
In my opinion, "crucial features" mean:
Lens system larger than 40mm diameter.
Audio-in connection(s) AND manual audio control.
Manual zoom, Manual focus, Manual Shutter speed, Manual White Balance, and other controls on the outside of the camera and easy to get to.
Least amount of compression applied to the video stream when writing to the storage media.
The starting point that meets all four criteria is the Sony HDR-FX1000, but this is only prosumer… Pro grade starts at the Sony HVR-V1U, HVR-Z1U, HVR-Z5U, HVR-Z7U, Canon XHA1 and Panasonic AG-HVX200 and JVC GY series… And they go up from here.

The camera lens is jammed. Not too bad. I can get it fully open 20% of the time. The rest it’s nearly impossible. BTW it’s a Canon. I can’t remember the make. If it’s important, you can email me.
It’s broken.

Trilobites have unique eyes formed from calcite prisms. I heard a rumor that some of these lenses are so well presevered that they could be used for camera lenses.
I should make clear that I am refering to their fossilized eyes.
Well you could but you don’t normally get that kind of detail and if I recall calcite replacement is not likely to occur for soft parts like eyes. There are some amazing looking trilobite eyes in the fossil record but you don’t as a rule use them for more than studying trilobites. Besides they’re so tiny why would you use them for that? (I’m going for an average trilobite. I know some were larger)

I am 15 and have never photographed professionally before (apart form my 2.0 mega pixel phone camera) but I really want to start
I would like a Digital slr camera but my budget is only £140 – I wouldn’t mind getting it second hand but you never know on the internet whether sources are trustworthy.
Ideally the camera should be small and lightweight (and not too breakable!!)
It doesn’t even need to be SLR but I would like it to be good quality
What would you recommend?
If you are just starting out and want to learn about photographic techniques there’s no real benefit in jumping into DSLRs straight away………..unless someone offers you a real bargain.
I would suggest you get some experience with a compact camera that has manual controls – aperture priority, shutter priority and fully manual. This will help you understand the importance of aperture, shutter speed etc. but you’ll also be able to experiment with white balance ISO sensitivity and other variables.
There aren’t too many compacts that have fully manual controls but a delve into a variety of camera websites such as Steve’s Digicams, DP Review and cameralabs should provide you with some likely candidates.
With your budget you might struggle to get the latest and greatest models but shop around. I picked up a Canon Powershot SX120 IS for just a little bit more than your budget which is a pretty new camera and has full manual options plus a 10x zoom and image stabilisation. I use it as a "take anywhere" camera and as a backup for my Nikon DSLR.
