Kodak Zi8: 1/2 Non-destructive removable wide angle lens mod

March 28, 2010 - 6:40 am 21 Comments

Part 1 of 2: I used Loctite epoxy putty to make a removable frame to hold a wide angle lens on a Kodak Zi8 video camera. I used epoxy, because it is not affected by heat as much as the moldable plastic you can buy online. I did not glue anything directly to the camera, nor did I have to take it apart to add a magnetic ring like a popular lens mod from china, so no warranty was voided and no damage occured to the camera.

I do have it. But I also wanted to use lenses I already have that are much better than that lens.

its a non residue stiking anheasive pad on a lil washer and instead of the camera using threads its magnetic and stays on that way

@RhetoricCamel My small lens is from dealextreme. The one in the vide is from amazon. I did not notice a yellow tint, but maybe it depends on the ambiant lighting

where did you buy your lens from? I bought the one from china and the wide angle has a bit of a yellow tint to it and slightly darkens the image, was wondering if you had this issue with yours and where you got it from? I’m going to be making this bracket for a 6x fixed zoom lens I also bought from china. Thanks for the video!

    You know. I think …
You know. I think plastic wrap might work and be easier to remove after. Also, I used a 37mm lens. If you use a fisheye, I am pretty sure it would work as a fisheye just fine.

instead of using tape to cover my camera, do you think i would be able to use plastic wrap? and would this work with a 37mm fisheye?

Any lens that is a conversion lens will work. I also have a telephoto lens, but it only does 2X. If you have a full blown zoon converting lens, it can work. I don’t have one.

Is there any way this will work with a zoom lens?
These things dont do zoom well and the only video Ive seen with one mounted they had removed the factory lens.
This is a brilliant idea…I think I could modify something to make the same sort of thing for my Zi6 which Id love to be able to ad a zoom lens.

    I would not …
I would not recommend touching your camera with epoxy putty without taping it. If you are afraid of the tape getting stuck, you can try using blue painters masking tape. It comes off easy, but is not as thin.

@UnicycleJunkie I am about to switch to using Pinnacle Studio 14 from now. I did not make this video with it, but it will do this and more and very easily. It is only for PC. If you are on Mac, I would recommend just using iMovie.

I agree. I would also rather not have an ugly bracket. What I might do is try the magnetic mod, but also keep the bracket. I think I might use the bracket for other things I already own like my UV and flourecent filters. I already have these for my canon vixia camera. I did not want to buy new filters.

Hey fishycomics. I like your demos so much, I places an annotation link in this video to your wide angle demo.

ragted 5 on both. Liked the idea. and gives me an idea for other things with epoxy. I would really like to know the exact name of glue , rather just at a local store lol.

be careful not to lose the W.A. and or the made up peice, it may break or not.

I believe it’s more a professional to walk around with the magnet then a ome made.

magnet force did not and still works perfect. my opinion. a great job, My hat off to you.
