If I have a 18-200mm digital camera lens is there any need to get a 50mm lens?

January 28, 2010 - 11:02 am 5 Comments

If I have a 18-200mm 4-5.6 digital camera lens is there any need to get a 50mm lens? 50mm 2.8?

Would I just be wasting money or is the 50mm totally different and gives extremely better quality of peoples faces?
Im using a nikon d80

there are several reasons you might want a 50 mm prime.

1. It’s a great portrait range for a digital SLR with a 1.5 or 1.6 magnification factor.
2. Prime lenses are usually sharper, simply because there are fewer moving parts.
3. (and this one might be the most important!) By using one lens such as the 50 mm, you will begin to appreciate the finer points about field of view, perspective, depth of focus, and composition in ways that are nearly impossible if the only lens you’ve ever used is a zoom.

Why? Because when you have to walk to get closer or farther away, you tend to think more about those critical factors. And, as a result, you just mght become a better photographer.

Remember, zoom lenses are a relatively new phenomenon. And until very recently, many professionals wouldn’t be caught dead using one.

I was a photographer for 25 years before I got my first zoom.

So, if you’re serious about developing your skills as a photographer, sure, getting and learning to use a 50 mm prime might be very useful.

Caveat: there does, however, seem to be a cult developing over this question – People who have become 50 mm fanatics, if you will. That’s not good either.

Truth is, it can simply be fun and educational to try something different, and expand your arsenal of tools.

My brand new kodak m340 camera lens is stuck open and will not close. what do i do?

January 23, 2010 - 10:56 pm 2 Comments

I had just bought a brand new kodak m340 digital camera, Its only a month old. The lens is stuck open, When I try to turn it on the lens will close, then open again, than beep twice. Nothing shows up on the screen. I have now idea how to fix it, any ideas?

Has it fallen once?

Anyhow what can I say Kodak and "my lens is stuck" is pretty common around here. Kodak doesn’t makes good quality cameras and a stuck lens is very common you should be able to replace it under warantee IF you haven’t let it fall. It usually happens when it falls!

But really the parts used in Kodak Cameras seem.. really low quality as the amount of posts with this question here are so common. Please next time don’t buy Kodak!

Lydia – A Camera Lens and Careful Days

It’s always blue and black or breaking skin,
Well, cover up, girl, we’ll finally leave again.
And you breathe me in so well,
in your room under the cover of this night.

We are safe; we are, as long as you whisper.
But my eye was caught by your picture.
That’s hanging from your mirror,
like something you forgot.
I’ll say we couldn’t sleep just staring at the clock,
But when numbers seem to blur and the reflection is lost,
Anything is love as you stare into your box.

So now we’re used to the rain.
We can swim and I’ll say we were never worried,
Because the floods will only bring the coast and Atlantic closer.
I thought I told you, girl.
I thought that I showed you the reason;
All I truly want is to get in your head
And steal your imagery.
So we can both go to your second story house.
You would never believe this snow.
It gets so heavy on our lungs.
But it’s been creeping up your walls and closing down the roads.
But I swear I’m loving while.
I swear I still will hide away from the cold.

“I think that for me, everyday would be the last day of summer.
Or I’d be left out in the cold, with no place to go.
Because, there are very few people that I can relate to
to every day of my life, forever, that will understand me,
Because I’ve gone places where very few people ever go.
I mean, I played the ultimate gamble of all; I gambled my life.”

“You’re fine, go back to work and we’ll let you know when she comes.”.

I swear we’re almost there and we’ll be safe inside.
Down those stairs to your room where I could stay for days.
Substance is over us, please don’t do this.
‘Cause this may never change,
oh, but I’m still here, here.
It’s all the same.

How do I dispose of my broken camera lens?

January 21, 2010 - 4:28 pm 2 Comments

I broke it when I let it knock against something :( and I got it replaced. It’s from a Canon Rebel E05. I’m pretty sure it can’t be fixed because the part is inside the lens part where it connects to the camera. But I could be wrong, if I am, let me know that too Please?

Donate it to a camera repair station. They may be able to use some of its components and what is left over will be disposed of in an environmentally sound way

What can I do about a foggy camera lens?

January 16, 2010 - 12:18 pm 4 Comments

I have a canon sure shot 150u camera that has been working fine (clear lens, nice pictures, good focus) I left it in my car for the past two days in the glove compartment and now the lens is foggy and I cant see unless I zoom all the way. It has been humid and I’m wondering if there could be moisture in it. I’ve tried using a q tip and cleaning all of the lens and eye parts but it didnt work. What can I do to fix it? Any suggestions, solutions Please. Thank you in advance

One more excellent example of why you should always read the Owner’s Manual. I’ll bet a dollar to a donut that it warns in the Manual against storing the camera in those conditions.

I read that warning 36 years ago when I bought my first SLR, a Minolta SRT-100. And that was a completely manual camera with the meter the only battery-dependent component.

Try placing the camera in a sealed plastic bag with several packages of desiccant and maybe that will dry it out. Its likely you’ve done sufficient abuse to your camera for it to need a trip to the service center. Repairs will be at your expense of course since you abused it.

What to use to clean a camera lens?

January 6, 2010 - 3:37 pm 2 Comments

I have a canon powershot A550 and errm.. There is dried water on the lens and is there anything i can use to clean it? (it’s making my pictures blurry) Without ruining my camera?
Is there anything homemade I can use?

use 91% isopropyl alcohol and a SOFT piece of t shirt.

be sure the shirt is extremely clean before use. any grit can scratch the coating on the lens.

What is the best and safest way to clean your camera lens?

December 30, 2009 - 8:43 pm 7 Comments

I have a very expensive camera and I am afraid to clean the lens with something that might damage it! HELP!!

First, DO NOT, repeat, DO NOT use alcohol on any part of your camera, especially the lens.

Second, DO NOT use a Q-Tip on a lens.

In 37+ years of enjoying photography I have never used a liquid lens cleaner.

Use a lens cloth made for a camera lens. You can order them on-line or buy one at your local camera shop.

While you’re buying your cloth buy a UV/Haze filter to protect the front element of your lens.

What does this mean when buying a camera lens?

December 28, 2009 - 6:58 am 3 Comments

When you are looking to buy a camera lense for a DSLR and it is speaking about how the lens is, say, 17mm-85mm, what is that saying about the lens? I am unsure and would really like to know. Also, if you could refer me to any good lenses for the canon rebel xs that would be lovely :)

Those numbers refer to the focal length and zoom range of your lens. The lower number provides a wider angle of view then roughly when zoomed to about 35mm you are in the area called the normal angle of view, similar to how the eye sees. Then higher than that you are starting to move into the telephoto range bringing things closer to your viewpoint than how the eye sees it.

In regards to other lenses, much of that will depend on what it is you are trying to do with your photography. I am going to assume that your Canon Rebel XS can with a 18-55mm lens, and if that is so then a good possibility is that a telephoto zoom lens would work well. There are zoom that go to 200mm and 300mm, if you want things far away to be as close as possible then the 300mm will get you a closer view then the 200mm.

Below are some link that could be of help. The first, photo.net, is an online community of photographers where you can do some research and gain some more information. Then I listed links for Tamron, Sigma, and Tokina who are independent lens makers that make lens that mount and work on many of the brand name cameras, including Canon. I have owned lenses through the years made by all 3 and the lenses worked very well for me. The last link is to a dealer, I did a search for telephoto zooms that work on Canon so you can see some options and prices.

Hope this helps.

Good luck.

nikon camera lens do i really need to pay more for Vibration Reduction?

December 25, 2009 - 4:40 pm 4 Comments

should i really pay more for .Vibration Reduction in a lens for a nikon camera?

Vr is a fairly new innovation on cameras ( in the large scheme that is ). So no you don’t. VR will let you use a slower shutter speed handheld with the same length lens. If you are not using VR use the reciprocal of the lens focal length as your slowest handheld speed ( eg 200 mm lens 1/250 sec slowest shutter speed) or use a tripod or monopod when you are slower.
