What type of digital SLR camera should I buy?

January 23, 2011 - 9:20 pm No Comments

I’ve just recently decided to get into photography, and am saving up to buy a digital SLR camera. I don’t want to completely blow all my money on it and splurge, but I want a nice camera that’ll get the job done. Most of the shots I’m gonna take will be around the small, colonial town I live in .. so either in front of old buildings, in fields, in the woods, etc.

Any suggestions for this rookie photographer? :D
Thanks, guys!

I would buy either a pentax, nikon, or canon. Each will have different offerings and features in your price point and all make good cameras. Go to a store where you can see them all and pick the one you like best. If you go with nikon or canon, buy the 50mm 1.8 or 1.4 lens. You will love it.

What is the difference between SMALL format SLR camera and Medium format SLR camera?

January 19, 2011 - 1:33 am 5 Comments

Please explain me as simply as possible,
I am reading in the book (have to do an assignment) but I can’t understand the point. There’s written in most of small format SLR cameras the shutter is in the focal plane inside the camera body.
I have Nikon D70 , is it small or medium format camera? because the shutter is in my nikkor lense, not in camera body
thank you!

About $10,000. All kidding aside, no your camera is not medium format. There are major differences and I will point out a few. First, besides the $10k starting price, the sensor size is much larger. Sensor Size Comparison http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:SensorSizes.svg . Second, you have more stops. A canon 5d mark ii has about 9 stops while a medium format will have 12-13 stops. Third, they are almost all 16 bit files unlike 35mm dslr’s which are 12-14bit (resulting in more colors and smoother gradients). Medium format files are also much easier to touchup for magazines.

As one poster said
Most "Large Format" DSLR’s are known by ‘Full-frame.’
This is incorrect. That is not large format, it is 35mm or Full frame.

What is the best SLR digital camera to buy?

I not a professional photographer by any means, but I do like to take pictures and would really like to have a nice camera, but not spend $1,000s of dollars. Any suggestions on a nice digital SLR camera that is around $500?

How about the new Pentax Kr? Image stabilisation built into the camera so any lens you fit is image stabilised at no extra cost. Probably the best APS sensor in any DSLR not just entry level, all the functions you will ever need some only available on a Pentax. By far the cheapest system to buy into. True compatibility with old manual lenses, there are thousands of these around reasonably priced (less than £100, often a lot less). I could go on, but that’s enough I hope.

Here’s a well regarded independent review

What is the difference between a camera with SLR and one without?

January 11, 2011 - 5:20 pm 6 Comments

I want to buy a camera but I really have no idea where to start. Somebody suggested (D)SLR cameras but I don’t know the difference.

Any good SLR (or regular) cameras in the $200-$500 range?

A slr (or Dslr) is a single lens reflex camera meaning the camera uses a set of mirrors that allow you to see directly through your lens instead of above it as with older point and shoots. Dslr’s have interchangeable lenses and aren’t commonly used as pocket cameras. A good Dslr to start with is the Nikon D3000 which runs about $300 -$400ish.

If all SLR camera can be upgraded then why there are different models of SLR cameras?

December 13, 2010 - 3:12 am 3 Comments

Currently I was looking for buying a SLR camera but i was really confused, When all SLR camera can be upgraded to what lens we want to then why there are different models and different price. Also Suggest what to look for when buying a SLR camera!!!
I am looking to buy a camera and I am really confused whether i should buy a slr or a compact digital camera… my range would be around 22K

Your question is a little confusing. Are you looking to purchase an SLR (film camera) or a DSLR (digital camera)
SLR’s & DSLR’s have interchangable lenses so the photographer can customize how he is going to shoot.
Macro lens for very close images
Prime lens for portraits
Zoom lens for general use.
Telephoto for long range shots
Spending 22K on photo gear will not make you a photographer, only practice and some good gear will get on your way.
I have a friend that spent around $6000.00 on a ton of high end Canon gear and ended up selling it all because he was more comfortable and did better with his compact point and shoot camera.

What is the best digital SLR camera for a beginner?

November 27, 2010 - 9:39 pm 8 Comments

I’m 16 and I have been really interested in photography for a long time. At school I have taken several digital photography classes and in all of them I have used my point and shoot camera. I’m ready to move up to the digital SLR cameras but I’m not sure what brand or model. I would prefer to stay in the hundreds for the price range and nothing too complicated yet. Help!

You will find many people recommend the Nikon or the Canon Rebels (of which there are 3 models). I found the viewfinders too busy for my tastes, even though I have been a Canon user all my life. Some one on this forum recommend a Pentax Kx. I checked the camera out and fell in love. I need another camera like I need a hole in my head. The viewfinder is relativity uncluttered and the camera is light. I never thought I would go back into a SLR or more properly called a DSLR (digital SIngle Lens Reflex). The point that the focus stabilization is built into the camera, allowing one to use lenses from other Pentax cameras (film type included) was a smart feature on Pentax’s part. The price is also more reasonable. Check it out!

I need advice to be a SLR camera and digital camera?

November 17, 2010 - 6:52 am 6 Comments

I already have a Nikon D60, but I am looking to get a new digital camera and SLR.
My requirements for the SLR and the compacted digital camera are the same.
1) not outrageously expensive
2) zooms in far
3) takes good photos in the night
4) takes good action shots
5) take videos
6) flattering for scenery and face shots

Thanks so much! If you could send me links to sites that would also be awesome.

1. Entry-level dSLRs are the cheapest if brand new. Lesser features, shorter control range, harder to access controls but basically the same as the more expensive models.

2. Zoom depends on the lens. The dSLR is just the camera body. You can buy the body and the lens separately. The longest zoom I have heard of for dSLRs is 15X. For compacts, 26X. The best quality lenses do not zoom.

3. Higher ISO, better for low light. High ISO values increase picture grain. In low light, use flash. If not, shoot in well lighted situations only.

4. Faster shutter speed, better for action. This will only apply if there is sufficient amount of light.

5. Video on a digital camera. Some have it, some don’t. It’s just a feature. Getting a digital video recorder is better.

6. Flattering shots depend on the photographer. The camera is just a tool.

You already have a dSLR. It would be better just to get more lenses or for video, you may want to get a digital video camera instead.

For a compact camera I recommend a Sony Cybershot. Easy to use, well built, and comes with lots of features enough to satisfy a dSLR user.
