My sister needs a camera for her university work. She is doing some photography modules and needs something that can produce quality shots. Not sure if she needs a SLR or a Compact. She would like to be able to use the camera after her course finishes as well. Any suggestions what her options may be? Thanks.

She may need a 35 mm SLR for the first couple of semesters while taking the basics of photography. A good used Nikon or Canon 35 mm SLR with standard zoom lens will cost less than $150 on craigslist in a city near you

Have her check with her instructors and see what she really needs. It would be a shame to spend $1,200 on a mid-range camera and standard zoom lens only to find out that she will be using film for the first year in school

The two mid-range DSLR’s I would recommend is the Nikon D90 with 18-105 mm lens or the Canon 50D with 18-135 mm lens.

NO photo module will allow a student to use a compact P&S camera. They will need a camera that is fully adjustable to complete their courses in photography and NO compact digital camera can do that

http://live.pirillo.com – Back in the seventh grade, I won a prize of being able to take a few classes at the local Arts center. Back then, we didn’t have Digital Cameras. We learned with an actual film (SLR) camera. I fell in love with taking pictures that day, and that is one love that has never waned.
