What is the best SLR camera for a newbie?

I am planning on getting the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi.I was wondering if anyone has had experience with this camera or if there is a better slr camera out there? I mainly want something that is easy to navigate because its my first time using a high quality camera.
Nikon D40, hands down.

It is very lightweight and easy to get used to, the images are great, too.
I definitely do not prefer cannons, especially for beginners.

That’s about as good as it gets.

The Sony a200 is widely considered one of the best entry level cameras in its price range. And although they have improved the menu system since, it is still a very easy camera to navigate. It runs about the same price as the Rebel.
I have a Sony a700 and I chose it for several reasons. Sony has in-body stabilization. Every lens I own is stabilized on my camera. They have the best ergonomics-IMO. And it is the most comfortable camera with a button for everything. I love it.
The best camera for you is the one in your price range that you enjoy the most. That may be the Canon Rebel, a Nikon D60, or it may be a Sony alpha. Just try some out at a camera store to see which one you really like using.

Everyone I have spoken to that knows about cameras recommends the digital Rebel T1i as an entry level SLR. The quality, features and ease of use will serve you for years to come. If you can swing it get the kit with the image stabilization lens. If you have to get an older model of Rebel like the XTi still get an image stabilization lens:
