Small? Come on, it’s not like the JVC is any bigger.
Flash away from lens reduces red-eye, but this flash is as close as it gets.
With such statements it’s clear that he can’t be trusted.

    Later Xacti’s such …
Later Xacti’s such as the HD1000, HD1010 and HD2000 look cooler and have progressively better picture quality especially with regard to moving things (which this camera is not good at).

However while this one creates bog standard mp4, the later cameras produce the whizz H264 files. These can require more processor power to edit and render.

I covet a later model Xacti but for Youtube Vlogging, this HD2 is ample.

  16. timtak1 Says:

    With the Xacti, you …
With the Xacti, you can also turn off the automatic gain control but I find that a direction microphone is enough.

The mic input would be useful if
    1) You want to record music etc where sound quality is important
    2) You want to do reportage (”vlogging”)
    3) You just want good audio quality

But if you are just taking holiday/fun videos and you don’t mind the usual sound quality of normal video cameras then it is not important.

  17. timtak1 Says:

    The camera records …
The camera records sound without an external microphone just like any other camera.

However, AFAIK normal video cameras record a lot of background noise cause they have non directional microphones and automatic gain control so that even when you are not speaking the gain ramps up to catch anysounds in the room.

This makes it difficult to vlog except at home.

The Xacti has a microphone input which means that you can use a directional micrphone and point it at your mouth.

I bout it for the …
I bout it for the microphone jack but it was the microphone jack that was faulty upon purchase. There were clicks. (One of my videos, about hair dye, shows the clicks). There were apparently two problems, one mechanical and one not, that were fixed under warranty. Subsequently I worried that the non-mechanical problem that was fixed might concievably have been due to the fact that I tried all sorts of microphones due to the mechanically caused clicks. Since repair I have used only spec mikes.

  20. timtak1 Says:

I am not sure of …
I am not sure of the impedance, but the sort of microphone with plug-in-power. I am not sure about a dynamic microphone…The output would be very low but it may work. I would be scared to try it bearing in mind the problems that I had with microphone jack in the past. A plug-in-power microphone is specified.

If you want good quality audio (as I do) then an external microphone is a must.

It is pretty rugged. I used to carry it around in my pocket all the time, lately in a hip pouch.

Would you buy a Xacti CA8 if you had a digital camera with the following features?

7m pixels. 3 x optical zoom. 5 x digital zoom. 2.5in LCD screen. Digital anti-blur. SD memory card compatible. 16MB memory is supplied with the camera. Movie capture with sound. Maximum ISO range: 400. 9 scene modes. Pictbridge compatible.

For YOU TUBE, and NOW YOU MENTION a AUX/MIC plug..WHAT IMPEDANCE? I would want BETTER QUALITY AUDIO as a LIVE PERFORMER, the VIDEO is <secondary..But your remarks have CHLLENGED those from another I submitted. ONE OTHER QUESTION, how is it for RUGGEDNESS? (Compared to a ELPH-ALL STEEL ACKET!=or a TARGET 100.00$ Video Cam which BROKE in less than 30 days..??)

    I beg to differ.

    I beg to differ.

The CMOS sensor in this is large.

Trouble is that it is rumoured to have been created for a still camera. This means that for fast moving things (like sports) the picture quality is not too good. But for documentary (faces talking), or city/landscapes then the quality is very good.

That is not to say that I would call it a “true HD image” but it is better than most DV, I think.

  24. timtak1 Says:

    No microphone jack …
No microphone jack on the vado means that vlogging is difficult due to all the background noise.

  25. timtak1 Says:

I still enjoying mine. Great for youtube. The best thing is the mic jack. Not many have one. Worst thing is the way it does not deal with motion too well.
